Rebecca Desmond - Scenic Designer

School Journey
School Journey to the Centre of The Earth - The Stahl Theatre
With an early introduction to technical theatre working as a Stage Casual at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick, the busy repertory theatre provided Rebecca with a springboard into professional theatre. Earning her degree at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts Rebecca trained in Technical Theatre specializing in Scenic Design and Stage Management. The intensive introduction to every field within technical theatre allowed Rebecca not only to look in depth at the main departments of Stage Management, Lighting, Sound, Construction and Design, but also more specialist training such as Voice and Presentation, Score Reading and Theatre History. Specializing in Design Rebecca was able to practice her craft and hone her skills across the broad spectrum of design including, model making, puppetry, scenic painting and colour mixing (including paint frame experience), auto cad, technical drafting, latex and clay prop making, stress and strain mechanics and scriptural and textural analysis.

In September 2008 Rebecca was appointed as Technical Drama Fellow at The Stahl Theatre in Northamptonshire. The Stahl Theatre is a public producing theatre owned by Oundle School, a co educational boarding school situated near Cambridge. The Fellowship allows integration into both school and theatre, providing technical support at the theatre whilst supporting the academic education of Drama and Theatre Studies at GCSE and A Level. The Stahl produces 6 main house productions a year, a number of special events and hosts a variety of professional touring companies to whom Rebecca provides technical and production support.

During her time at Mountview and at The Stahl Theatre, Rebecca has been able to maintain freelance activities in London, working with companies in mainly artistic and managerial capacities. This includes work with companies such as Green Hippo, The Gate Theatre in Nottinghill, Box of Tricks, Ovation, Upstairs at the Gatehouse, Tête àTête, Opera North, Riverside Studios Hammersmith, Lakeland Opera and Oundle Festival Opera.

After spending a happy 4 years at The Stahl Theatre Rebecca is now coming to the end of her contract and beginning to look for new opportunities and collaborators to work with. With an interest in all forms of performance and particular interest in opera, Rebecca hopes to continue to build her design portfolio and find some interesting projects along the way.
